London Calling

Tommy Ward isn’t your typical flawless hitman. He’s a mediocre professional, unlucky and constantly on the edge, someone who works out of necessity rather than true conviction. After making a serious mistake during a job in London, he suddenly becomes a target for the city’s most dangerous criminal forces. With his life at risk, Tommy has no choice but to disappear fast and flee across the ocean, ending up in Los Angeles. Far from everything he knows and, most importantly, far from his son back in the UK, he finds himself trapped in a dangerous in-between state, where every decision could be the one that gets him killed.

In Los Angeles, Tommy’s only chance to stay alive is to accept a new deal with a local crime boss named Benson. The bargain sounds simple on the surface: in exchange for protection and a way back to London, Tommy must take care of Benson’s teenage son, Julian, and teach him how to become “a man” by their rules. In other words, he’s expected to turn Julian into someone capable of handling the criminal world without hesitation.

The problem is that Julian is the last person anyone would imagine as a gangster’s heir. He’s awkward, naïve, insecure, and drawn to interests that feel miles away from violence and street life. What begins as an assigned mission slowly turns into an unpredictable relationship, built on tension, sarcasm, and unexpected moments of connection. For both of them, the encounter starts to crack their certainties: Tommy tries to teach Julian how to survive, but he’s forced to confront himself in the process. Julian, meanwhile, is pulled into a reality that fascinates him as much as it terrifies him.

From here, the film unfolds as a mix of action and dark comedy, with increasingly chaotic situations, chases, and risky choices pushing the characters past their limits. London Calling isn’t just a crime story. It’s also about a desperate attempt to get home, and perhaps to understand what it truly means to deserve it.

Tommy Ward non è il classico sicario impeccabile: è un professionista mediocre, sfortunato e sempre sul filo del rasoio, uno che lavora più per necessità che per scelta. Dopo aver commesso un errore gravissimo durante un incarico a Londra, si ritrova improvvisamente nel mirino della criminalità più potente della città. Per salvarsi è costretto a sparire in fretta e ad attraversare l’oceano, rifugiandosi a Los Angeles. Lontano dalla sua vita e, soprattutto, da suo figlio rimasto in Inghilterra, Tommy entra in un limbo fatto di paura e improvvisazione, dove ogni passo può essere quello sbagliato.

A Los Angeles, l’unica possibilità per non finire schiacciato da chi lo sta cercando è accettare un nuovo accordo con un boss locale, Benson. Il patto è semplice solo in apparenza: in cambio di protezione e della possibilità di tornare a Londra, Tommy deve occuparsi del figlio adolescente di Benson, Julian, e insegnargli a diventare “un uomo” secondo le regole del loro mondo. In altre parole, deve trasformarlo in qualcuno capace di muoversi nel crimine senza esitazioni.

Il problema è che Julian è tutto ciò che un gangster non vorrebbe avere come erede. È impacciato, ingenuo, poco sicuro di sé, più attratto da interessi che sembrano lontanissimi dalla violenza e dalla mentalità da strada. Tra lui e Tommy nasce un rapporto imprevedibile: all’inizio è solo un obbligo, una missione imposta, ma col tempo diventa un legame fatto di tensioni, sarcasmo e momenti di inattesa complicità. Per entrambi, quell’incontro finisce per aprire crepe nelle loro certezze: Tommy prova a insegnare le regole della sopravvivenza, ma è costretto anche a guardarsi allo specchio; Julian, invece, scopre un lato della realtà che lo affascina e lo spaventa nello stesso momento.

Da qui prende forma un racconto che unisce azione e commedia nera, con situazioni sempre più fuori controllo, inseguimenti e scelte rischiose che spingono i personaggi oltre il limite. London Calling non è solo una storia criminale: è anche il tentativo disperato di tornare a casa e, forse, di capire cosa significhi davvero meritarsela.
